***Flat Stanley's Olympic Adventures***

Hi Kids!

Another very busy day for Pj and me!

First of all we had to go to the ice rink with Mikey V  to meet with some of our bosses to talk about a part of the event called the Gala which is happening on the last Saturday of the Games.  It should be very exciting!  Peter and Mario are from Germany and Pj has known them for a very long time and although Peter can say some scary things...he always says it with a twinkle in his eye so I got to learn that he was just kidding and wouldn't really find a pack of wolves to feed her to.  (Me too is she was holding me!!)

After the work was done we took the bus (remember we get on it for FREE!) back to the city and met our friends Josee and Robert to go to a party to celebrate the Super Bowl.  Pj and Mikey V had met a very intersting and friendly bus driver on the way to work that morning who said that they could take the Sky Train to the waterfront and then go by Fairy to the other side of the bay to North Vancouver.

Vancouver sure is a wacky place!  First of all..we went on the SKY TRAIN which isn't in the sky at all it's UNDER GROUND at least where we were; kind of like Toronto's subway.  Then by Fairy???  Across the water??? What if she drops us is all is what I was thinking.  Pj can swim but I'm not even laminated!!!   Then I overheard Mikey V and Robert talking about the fairy again and this time calling it The Seabus.  Well that didn't make me feel any better. A SEA .....BUS??!!  What if someone didn't close their windows tight enough? The same problem with the lack of lamination for me.  Couldn't these people just use some bridges???

Whew...we arrived at the SeaBus terminal only to find that we were going to travel by FERRY and not FAIRY!!  While we were wating for the ferry to arrive, I met a new friend named Chloe.  She was really pretty and nice and she and her Mom are coming to see a figure skating event.  Pj  and Mikey V had better have their acts together by then!! One funny thing:  Kooky Josee thought we were already on the ferry while we were still on the dock.  I think it was her first time on public transportation and she was still confused by the whole underground Sky Train thing. (I was too!) It was fun to see the city from the water although there was noplace to step outside on the deck to watch.  You will see from the pictures that we had a nice time!

I have some exciting news!!! We all went to dinner when we got back to this side of the city (this itme by taxi and over a bridge!) and I met another couple of new friends.  Monique, or as Mikey V likes to call her Dominique (Hmm...I guess it's a grown up thing...I am not sure why?) is the French announcer for Curling and is from Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She is also going to be staying for the Paralympics and working at curling and is very nice AND she brought a friend with her too from her son's school in Manitoba.  His name is Gaston Bison (he is French Canadian) AND we are going on exchange sleepovers!!!  Monique is also the french announcer for the Team Welcome Ceremonies in the Athlete's Village and she is taking me with her TODAY!!!  I get to be inside the Athlete's Village where you only get to go if you are an athlete!!! I am going to be on my best behaviour!!  Monique is also going to take me to Curling and Pj is going to bring Gaston to figure skating AND Robert and Dany are going to take him to Short Track Speed Skating!

Although I am from Willow Glen, I also say that I have good friends at Ashgrove and Elmcrest so we can all share in the fun!!

I have only been here a couple of days and already the adventures are amazing!!

Talk to you soon :)

Hi Kids!!

I made it all the way to Vancouver and had a really good night's sleep last night!  It was a good thing because Pj and I were really busy today!

Pj introduced me to her friends from the Snowboard crew.  They are very cool AND very friendly.  Kevin and Uncle E and Spence and Andrea offered to take a picture with me and then got everyone to gather around for a picture with the banner!  Uncle E says the most important thing you need to be part of the Snowboard crew is "hat-itude". (He likes wearing hats a lot!)

We met up while we were waiting at a place to get a tag known as "accreditation" which has everyone's full name as well as their picture and where they are working.  The people who work there have a very important job because they need to be sure that they are giving these tags out to the right people and that everyone who has a tag is able to work where they are supposed to.  There are letter codes on the tags that identify the location where you will be working and what kind of a job you do. The cool thing is with this tag Pj can take us on any city bus for free! (Guess how much Pj likes free stuff?  A whole lot is how much!!!)

After getting the tag we lined up again for our uniforms in the same building and the nice ladies in the room where you can try things on kindly held me up for a picture and then unrolled the Ashgrove banner to do the same thing.

The next line-up was in a warehouse place where all of the uniforms are stored on shelves.  Pj handed the lady behind the counter a sheet of paper that had her name on it as well as the size of clothing she needed and the lady went and got a bag and filled it with all of the items.  There are 2 long-sleeved blue shirts, one pair of pants, one jacket, one vest  AND a pretty blue hat that the lady let me try on!

After that we went to the arena where Pj will be working and she was able to meet one of her new bosses and get a cell phone from him to use during the next 3 weeks.  The arena looks great and I am sure that there will be some great skating going on there pretty soon!

After lunch, we went to a meeting with all of the announcers and DJs and producers and everyone who will be working at sites around the city.  It was a lot of fun and great to meet so many new people.

I think I am going to love it here!  More adventures as they happen :)  Make sure to go to my Gallery to check out the pictures.

Bye for now.

I am in the air; Vancouver bound and getting really excited about the competition.  Time to lay out my predictions.

There are so many hopes riding on the shoulders of the Canadian figure skating team that it’s time to really look at the who’s who and what’s what. Starting with pairs, it’s hard to imagine that Canada’s champions Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison won’t be on the podium on the strength of their spellbinding free program at Canadians in January. The problem, as I see it, for any contender is the need to deliver in the short program.

Time and time again, I have said that you can’t win an event based on the strength of a short program, but if the competition is really tight like it will be for pairs, you sure can lose it. I think it will be the two-time Olympic Bronze medalists from China, Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao who will prevail. I am picking China's Qing Pang and Jian Tong over teammates and 2006 Olympic silver medallists Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang for silver based on their performance in the Grand Prix. What about the German two-time World champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy? This should have been their year but they had to scrap their free and start over with a terrific program but they seem to be striggling with nerves. European champions Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov of Russia seem to be the strongest candidates for the bronze but if  Dube and Davison can perform "career" short and free programs they are definitely in the mix for the bronze.

The defending Olympic champion from Russia, Evgeny Plushenko is ahead of the pack coming into Vancouver and. I believe that he will dominate the competition here as the most consistent competitior in the field. His prowess as a jumper and as a skater have never been questioned it's just the construciton of his programs that leaves something to be desired. He gets credit for his skill and gets a bit of a "gimme" for his programs when he could be brilliant.  If I had had my way, I would have paired him with one of the legendary names in choreography like Lori Nichol, David Wilson, Catarina Lundgren, Marina Zueva or Tom Dickson to name a few, to produce a program that would have endured the test of time. Give me a reason to remember the 2010 Olympic Games! I am trying to decide who will fill the other two spots and with a field as deep as any I have seen in a long time, it’s tough. American champion Jeremy Abbott is a male version of Kostner in that as solid as he is one competition, he can fold like a house of cards the very next time out. For this reason, I believe that defending world champion from the United States, Evan Lysacek, has reached the point in the season where it’s time to “hit the ice skating”. Last year, he was on a slow build towards Worlds and in fact had been left off the radar by more than a few people in favour of Abbott, only to take the title in a show of determination and brilliant skating. Canadian favourite and defending world silver medallist, Patrick Chan will hopefully have put the three weeks between nationals and the Olympics to good use in his journey back to optimum health after a calf tear and a case of the flu in the fall had sidelined him. If there was ever a time to get your head out of the way and let your body and feet do what they know how to do, this would be it. If that is the case then he could definitely be in the running for a medal. That said, so could Japan’s Nobunari Oda, Daisuke Takahashi, Swtizerland’s Stephane Lambiel and France’s Brian Joubert. See what I mean? A list of contenders as long as my arm.

Figure skating.   Who’s going to step up?

Time will tell and that time is almost here.

Let’s review: you can’t win an event based on the strength of a short program, but if the competition is really tight, you sure can lose it.

In a field where none of the women has been consistent over the season it really is anybody’s to take. My money is still on defending world champion from Korea, Yu-Na Kim, because of her competitive strategy over the season. I admire that she has “kept her eye on the prize” and not been dissuaded or distracted by events like the 4 C’s despite any pressure that she might have felt to support a competition in her home country. For the rest of the podium, there are a number of different possibilities: I love the fact that three-time European champion from Italy, Carolina Kostner is as unpredictable as a two-year old’s mood: “When she’s good, she’s very, very good and when she’s bad she’s awful.” You just never know. Joannie Rochette, Canada’s 6 time national champion and defending world silver medallist, has everything in place but cannot afford to drop the ball in the short only to try and come back in the free program. She seems to do her best skating when she is mad at herself and  “doing the chasing”, as in coming back from 2nd place at Nationals in the short. The problem is at the Olympic Games there are no points to spare. The other two names to watch for are Japanese world champions from 2007 and 2008, Miki Ando and Mao Asada respectively.   Both women know what it’s like to stumble in the full glare of public expectation. With only splashes of brilliance and many moments of trepidation during the season all of the top women are looking to the Olympics for redemption.

I believe that the winds of change are upon us in the field of ice dance with Canada’s three time champions and two-time world medalists leading the pack.   Not going down without a fight are two-time American dance champions, Meryl Davis and Charlie White who were kept off the world podium a year ago by Virtue and Moir and a margin of only .04. They are training mates, friends, at the same stage of life and without a doubt so well matched in talent, ability and programs that it will be the performances that will make the difference and not the material. I believe that Italian ice dance champions, Massimo Scali and Federica Faiella have successfully launched themselves into contention for a medal in Vancouver. Although they came second at the European Champions to defending World dance champions from Russia, Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, they won both the original and free dance portions which tells me that, correctly, their star is on the rise.  The 2008 World Champions from France, Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder have not been seen in international competiton since the Grand Prix Final from a year ago but were well known for their creativity and strength. Shoulder surgery and the birth of a baby for Isabelle has limited their training time and they are the real wild cards of the event which "ups" the interest and anticipation for me.

The Tango Romantica is the compulsory dance that has been drawn and what better way to start the drama than with a tango?

I would be lying if I said that I was kindly disposed to the fact that my arch (language) rival the mighty Grier has already produced his first Wacky English submission.  Although it wasn't found in Vancouver, he feels because he is already in Games mode that it counts.  I am iffy.  You will have to be the judge as you read his note:

"Dear Ms. Kwong,
If I recollect collectly, you previously made up some lame excuse about the fact that since Canadians speak English we'd have put the Silly English competish on hold until we get to London in 2012..
Well I am here to say that I will not be so easily put off...! The Games must go on!
I therefore submit my initial entry.  (I must preface my entry with a brief explanation of extenuating circumstances. Having arrived in Vancouver on the 19th of January, I began in earnest looking for suitable text.  I began scouring the Chinese restaurants across town... I checked out the Korean BBQ joints near Burnnaby... Japanese bars on Granville... Nothing!
My fortunes changed with the new month. On the 1st I flew to Tokyo for a brief meeting and a one-night layover at a Narita airport hotel... It was a grey cold February afternoon... Looking out the small hotel window and feeling a bit melancholy about my inability to find a suitable entry in our biannual silliness, I was struck by providence... For right there on the window in front of me was the following...
"NOTICE: Do not open a window to prevent a dewdrop or harmful insect entering"
The fact that I found this bit of wisdom in the far east maybring pause, but as am more or less 'at the Games', I think it merits approval.

I remain at your mercy..."

From my perspective it's no GREEK MEET BALLS (from Athens 2004) but given the fact that it is being submitted as a jumping off point, I think we will have to accept it.

Game on!
